Ethiopia's Northern Ethiopia
Gondor
Founded by the Empereror Fasilidas in the year 1635, the city of Gondor retains many of the medieval castles and designs that once adorned its landscape. Flanked by twin mountain streams, and perched 2300m above sea level, Gondor’s views are as captivating as the city itself. View the farmlands speckled along the rolling hills below as well as the shimmering blue of the serene Lake Tana 35km away.
Within the city, enjoy an antique charm woven into a tapestry of mysterious ambiance and violent history. Near the center, explore the extensive compound containing the impressive ruins of several imposing castles. The main castle is the 1630’s remnant of the emperor Fasilidas, whose great interest in architecture and design brought such sites as St. Mary’s in Axum to life. This captivating stage, much like an African Camelot, ignites visions of chivalrous knights on horseback as well as the darker images of Machiavellian plots and intrigues.
