Kenya's Nairobi
Ngong Hills
Rising 2,460m from the edge of The Great Rift Valley, the Ngong Hills form a natural divide between the small farming developments of Nairobi and the arid floor of the Rift Valley, where Maasai herds roam freely. A walk along the vibrant crest of the hills presents spectacular views of the city thriving to the east and the dry landscape preserved in the west.
Visit the African Butterfly Research Institute, where the wings of the thousands of butterflies native to the region flap freely, or venture to the true gem of the region, the Nairobi National Museum, where 114 sqkm of untouched rocky ridges and acacia lined riverbanks thrive protected from the encroaching urban jungle of Nairobi. Here, find zebras, elands, impalas, black rhinos and hippos, an interesting complement to the passenger jets that cross the skies above.
