Kenya's Nairobi
Amboseli National Park
Aside from the sprawling Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Amboseli National Park remains one of the most visited national parks in the country. Near Mt. Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park offers spectacular views of the elephants that trek across its plains against the snowy peaks painted pink by the rising African sun.
Named Amboseli for the fine alkaline grit that dance in whirls of white across the plains, this national park very closely resembles a vast open desert, with only 12 inches of precipitation annually. However, Amboseli remains a vital entity in the effort to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Kenyan landscape.
Watch lumbering herds of elephants, buffaloes and giraffes cross the plains, visit the Engongo Narok, a picturesque swamp produced from the trickling waters of Kilimanjaro percolating out of black lava fissures, or venture in to the Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary, a Maasai community dedicated to the preservation of elephants, lions, leopards and other animals.
