Although not unique to Kenya, the 6000km long canyon 20 million years in the making, is most dramatic in this Western Kenyan region. Formed when the land between a torn mountain ranged dropped 2000m below, The Great Rift Valley is one of spectacular scenery, boasting sheer valley walls, a plethora of both sleeping and active volcanoes and numerous hot springs fueled by underground lava chambers.
While the area is of great geological allure, it also hosts an intriguing human history; the notorious Koobi Fora only leading the list of archeological finds. Explore Lake Naivasha, one of the largest lakes in The Great Rift Valley as well as one of the few freshwater, or venture to the breathtaking Lake Nakuru National Park, where its rainy season brings what has been deemed the greatest bird spectacle on earth by the late Roger Tory Peterson.
