The Warm Heart of Africa

Malawi's Northern Malawi

Nyika National Park

With its characteristic granite domes and unique variety of vegetation, Nyika proves unlike any other place in Africa. Established in 1965, Nyika National Park is the oldest and largest in the country, covering some 3000sqkm of Malawi’s terrain. The primary feature of the park is the Nyika Plateau, a rolling landscape with a climate more like that found in the Scottish highlands than Africa’s southern half.

Above all, it is Nyika’s surreal sense of peace that makes this park so appealing. There is a wild, mystical air to the Park that proves most seductive early in morning’s dawn, when the air is crisp and the hills are enveloped in in blue mist. Trek through the rolling topography and its more than 200 species of orchids, mount horseback and gallop through its vast grasslands richly abloom with a brilliant spectrum of wildflowers, or pedal your way through the montane vegetation to catch a glimpse of the agile antelope, striking zebra and majestic leopard that populate the region.
