Namibia's Northwest

The Skeleton Coast

This treacherous Namibia coastline, marked by its desolate, inhospitable shores, has sealed the fate of misfortuned ships throughout the ages. A name fitting, the Skeleton Coast, and the 300km of arid desert that lies beyond, is known as the world’s largest ship graveyard. Even today, the foggy coastal sands are speckled with haunting reminders of vessels who met their match in the mighty storms and violent surf of the infamous Skeleton Coast.

Despite its notoriety for taking life, the Skeleton Coast also breeds it. Upon Cape Cross, find the enormous colony of more than 100,000 cape fur seals that breed in the safety of its protected waters. Hike the 40km trail beginning in the neighboring Henties Bay, and enjoy the breathtaking sand dunes, freshwater springs and fields of desert lichen found along this picturesque route; or simply enjoy the gregarious colony of seals as they lounge on the rocks of the cape.

In the northern half of the Skeleton Coast Park, known as the Skeleton Coast Wilderness, is the well reputed finest portion of the park. Visit the massive coastal dunes along the edge, or explore the Clay Castles of Hoarusib Canyon and Roaring Sands. Accessible solely through a private safari provider, enjoy desert elephant tracking, deep sea fishing, dune climbing and picturesque viewing, without the accompanying masses.
