Parc National Nyungwe Forest

This massive montane forest is both the largest in Central Africa, as well as one of the finest places to witness the thirteen species of chimpanzees that inhabit the park. While the park’s boundaries encompass one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, the Parc National Nyungwe Forest is one of Rwanda’s most recently protected areas.

Covering 970 sqkm of montane rainforest, Nyungwe promises visitors stunning scenery of lush greenery, the shimmering waters of Lake Kivu, and the towering peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes in the background. Should the chimpanzees fail to capture days of attention, the massive groups of colobus monkeys surely will.

Generally 300 to 400 strong within Nyungwe, these semi-habituated monkeys are believed to be the largest group of arboreal primates in Africa. Travel the outstanding hikes marked throughout the forest, enjoy the 270 species of tree, 70 species of mammal, 275 species of bird and amazing variety of orchids and butterfly that populate the park, or simply find yourself charmed entirely by the intriguing primates for which Nyungwe is known.
