South Africa's The Northern Region

The Northern Region

It may very well be South Africa’ largest province, covering almost a third of the country, but the Northern Cape remains one of the least populated, least visited and least understood areas in the country. Stretching from the Orange River in the North to the Western Cape border in the south, and the tiny villages of Springbok and Port Nolloth in the far west, the Northern Cape encompasses the deserts and semideserts of the Karoo, the Kalahari, Namaqualand and the Richtersveld. It is a land of distinguished beauty, comprised of grand and rugged topography, and a sense of loneliness best experienced in one of its renown lunar landscapes.

Explore Kimberly, the City of Diamonds, now the provincial capital and the former site of the 1870’s diamond rush, or witness the deepest copper mines in the world as seen in Namaqualand. Better yet, look above the ground and discover the true gems of the Northern Cape such as the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which combined with the adjoining national park in Botswana, makes this park one of the largest conservation areas in the world, and the first national park of is kind. For the flora enthusiast, Namaqualand proves a regular utopia, as every spring botanists from around the world come to witness the spectacular array of wildflowers that bloom above its soil.
