Uganda's Eastern Region
Mt. Elgon National Park
Within the easternmost region of Uganda, straddling the border of Rwanda, find the stunning peaks of Mt. Elgon. Originally designated a forest reserve, Mt. Elgon was finally granted its national park status in 1993, making it one of the youngest national parks on the continent. Ironic, being that, at an estimated 24 million years in age, Mt. Elgon is the oldest extinct volcano in East Africa.
Regardless, age remains of no concern when it comes to the breathtaking highlights found within the bounds of Mt. Elgon National Park. At its pinnacle, find the towering Wagagai Peak. Below, on the 20km long escarpment that forms Mt. Elgon’s peninsula, discover the pristinely intact, 8km wide caldera and the weathered hills and peaks that for a rim around the geographic phenomenon. Amidst the volcano’s lower slopes, view the serene lakes and massive gorges that make this park one of the most scenically diverse in Uganda.
