The best of Iberia – plus an eclipse

One of the very best places to observe this natural phenomenon will be the Asturian capital of Oviedo, a city known for its architectural riches and vibrant culture. Although it has existed since the 8th Century, there can be few occasions when the people of Oviedo have seen the sun extinguished, only for its light to return within minutes.

While the eclipse is the centerpiece of this journey, it’s far from the only reason we’ve chosen to step (briefly!) outside of Africa.

This astral journey includes time in the Portuguese city of Porto, UNESCO World Heritage Site and gateway to the renowned Douro Valley. Take in the spires, bridges, and colorful buildings cascading down to the water, and be sure to sample the region’s most famous product: port.

You’ll then continue into northern Spain, uncovering fascinating history, viewing breathtaking architecture, and discovering how each region expresses its identity through dialects, dress and most of all – through food.

Speaking of food, your itinerary will be enriched by the insights of astronomer, Dr. Jay White, who is also a jazz saxophonist and something of a chef himself. Who better to explain the astral improvisation you’re about to witness, riff on the astronomical spectacle unfolding above you, and make sense of the tossed salad of stars that will appear as the moon passes in front of the sun?

As you explore northern Spain, you’ll uncover details ranging from the town which was the first to receive the news of the discovery of America, to some of Spain’s finest white wines. From dramatic coastal scenery to medieval quarters that are best explored without a map, this region has much to offer – and it will live rent-free in your heart long after you’ve returned home.

You’ll be invited to take off your shoes and feel the delicious sensation of beach mud between your toes as you join a local “mariscadora” in search of Galicia’s impossibly fresh shellfish.
