Watch the ground, not only the sky. The crescent shadows, the shadow bands rippling across pale surfaces in the seconds before totality, and the darkness arriving across the landscape from the west are among the most memorable parts of the event, and they are the parts people miss because they are looking up.
Know when to take the glasses off. Certified ISO 12312-2 viewers are required for every partial phase. During totality itself they must come off, because with the sun fully covered there is nothing to filter and the corona is invisible through them. Getting this timing right is the difference between seeing the corona and missing it.
Plan for the first thirty seconds. Totality begins with a burst of colour at the edge of the moon — the chromosphere and any prominences visible along the limb — and it lasts only moments. Deciding in advance what you want to look at first is worth more than any equipment.
